From humble beginnings in the late '80s with turbines generating 100-200 kW of power, to the latest announcement of an 18 MW behemoth by CSSC Haizhuang, the wind energy sector has witnessed phenomenal growth. Wind farms with jaw-dropping capacities now sprawl across lands and seas. In this article, we embark on a journey to explore ten of the most gigantic wind projects globally, some fully operational and others under development.


1: Jiuquan Huaneng Wind Farm, Gansu, China

The Jiuquan Wind Power Base, also known as the Gansu Wind Farm, is a true titan in the world of wind energy. It first gained prominence in November 2010 when the first phase, boasting a remarkable 5.16 GW capacity, was completed. Situated in Gansu, China, this wind farm is an ambitious endeavor that spans Inner Mongolia, Jiuquan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei, and Xinjiang Provinces. In 2021, its capacity had already soared to 10 GW, and it's destined to reach an awe-inspiring 20 GW upon completion.


2: Dogger Bank Wind Farm, United Kingdom

Off the northeastern coast of England, a remarkable project is underway - the Dogger Bank Wind Farm. Comprising three phases, this offshore wind farm is set to become the world's largest upon its operational debut in 2026. Each phase boasts a staggering 1.2 GW capacity. What's even more impressive is that it will feature 277 of the world's most powerful offshore wind turbines – GE's Haliade-X. With a combined capacity of 3.6 GW, it's poised to generate 5% of the UK's electricity, powering up to six million homes. As if that's not enough, there are plans for a fourth phase, Dogger Bank D, which could add an extra 1.32 GW to the existing 3.6 GW.


3: Jaisalmer Wind Park, India

India is home to the sprawling Jaisalmer Wind Park, boasting a formidable 1,600 MW capacity. Developed by Suzlon Energy, this wind farm ranks among the largest globally and is a significant contributor to India's renewable energy landscape. It's situated in the picturesque Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, with roots dating back to August 2001. The project showcases Suzlon Energy's evolution, starting from their initial 350 kW models to the cutting-edge S9X 2.1 MW series.


4: Wind Prime, Iowa, Iowa, USA

In the United States, Wind Prime is set to make waves. Proposed by MidAmerican Energy, a subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Energy, this $3.9 billion project is a testament to the country's commitment to renewable energy. Wind Prime plans to deliver a substantial 2,042 MW of energy, predominantly from wind, with an additional 50 MW from solar. Pending approval, construction could wrap up by late 2024, cementing its status as the largest wind farm in the US.


5: Alta Wind Energy Center, California, USA

Terra-Gen Power's Alta Wind Energy Center is an impressive onshore wind energy project in the United States. With a substantial installed capacity of 1,548 MW, it stands as the third-largest onshore wind project globally and the largest in the US. Nestled in the Tehachapi Pass of the Tehachapi Mountains in California, this wind farm features 600 GE Renewable Energy turbines. Its first phase was completed back in April 2011, making it a pioneering force in the country's wind energy landscape.


6: Hornsea 2 Wind Farm, United Kingdom

The North Sea off the Yorkshire Coast is home to Hornsea 2, a fully operational offshore wind farm with a mighty 1.3 GW capacity. Comprising 165 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, this wind farm is a testament to the potential of offshore wind energy. Operating in tandem with Hornsea 1, these combined plants can provide power to a staggering 2.5 million homes. Spanning over 2,000 km2, the Hornsea zone is set to include yet another project, Hornsea 3. Each turbine's colossal 81-meter blades are capable of powering an average UK home for an entire day.


7: The Muppandal Wind Farm, India

India's Muppandal Wind Farm is a remarkable offshore project boasting a 1,500 MW capacity. Located in the Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, this farm is a creation of the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA). A unique feature is the wide range of wind turbines used, from 200 KW to 1,650 KW, including some of the oldest in the country. While commissioned in 1986, discussions are currently underway regarding the future of these turbines, considering their age and lifecycle.


8: The MacIntyre Complex, Toowoomba, Australia

Australia is home to the grand MacIntyre Complex, expected to be the largest wind farm in the country upon its completion in 2024. This ambitious project, operated by ACCIONA Energía, boasts a substantial 1,026 MW capacity. Comprising two wind farms, MacIntyre and Karara, this complex relies on 180 Nordex Delta 4000 turbines, each with a 5.7 MW power rating. These state-of-the-art turbines are set to generate clean electricity, catering to nearly 700,000 homes while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
